Braedon Monthony from New York is a dual, below-knee amputee who lost his legs due to a viral infection shortly after he was born. Now seven years old, Braedon deeply identifies with Winter’s tale of triumph, stating “she’s just like me!”
As Braedon watched Dolphin Tale, he saw that Winter was determined to adapt and learned to swim her own way after she lost her tail. Braedon exemplifies Winter’s perseverance and strength in his everyday life. Despite the loss of his legs, nothing slows Braedon down, whether he’s swimming or riding his bike around the neighborhood.
Determined to meet his hero, Braedon set up a lemonade stand in his yard to help fund his trip from New York to Clearwater. With a little help from local media, gofundme.com, and People Magazine, Braedon was able to raise over $4,000 – nearly double his initial goal.
After months of planning and anticipation, Braedon’s dream came true on March 28th, 2016. With lots of playful splashes, Braedon and his brother spent some quality dolphin time with Winter and Hope.
The meeting was very emotional for Braedon’s mother, Elaine. “Braedon was not a fan of his new prostheses in the beginning,” she states. “It took a lot of work, a lot of patience, and several adjustments.” Seeing her son come face to face with the dolphin who motivates him to keep trying was a major moment for the family. Best said in Braedon’s words, “If Winter can, so can I.”
After a few flipper waves goodbye, Braedon’s immediate response said it all, “that was awesome!”
